Transfer of motion perpendicular to motor shaft

This may be a very basic question, but I’m an ultra-novice in robotics so bear with me. I am imagining a project where I will be required to transfer motion from a DC motor shaft perpendicular to the position the shaft and gears are natively oriented when mounted. How is this typically done? It seems I could use a pulley/belt setup with some elasticity to change the angle but am interested to learn about alternatives.
