Teaching robots how to do stuff based on video games?

Now everyone has heard of projects like https://openai.com/ and https://deepmind.com/research/alphago/

I am wondering if there are any projects people are working on (on github etc.) that use video game engines or prebuilt game libraries for logic, movement and design. A terrible example might be, using a neural net that watches forza for 400hrs and it learns how to race cars. This is something I am interested in and would love to work on in the future, either independently or in a team; but I would like to know if its something people are doing already.
