So I’m new to this whole robotics and automation stuff, but I’m trying to really immerse myself. I have to construct an automated drilling rig, small scale of course. I plan to use a ball screw with a stepper motor to raise and lower an assembly weighing roughly 80 pounds that will be used to apply weight to the drill bit and contain our motor to turn the drill string. There is the option of using a load cell with a through hole on the ball screw, but I’m not having much luck trying to match one with the screw diameter. Is it possible to measure force using the torque of the stepper motor with a drive of some sort?
As mentioned, I’m very new to all of this as my undergrad is in a very different engineering discipline. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you very much.
