Best Way to Create a Robotic Arm

I’ve recently created an In-Browser application in javascript to control my robotics kit across the web, I’m looking to create a semi-professional robot arm to control in the app. I can’t decide if I should build from scratch, which I don’t have much experience in, or if I should purchase a kit. What are some good kits and or tips on how to build a durable robotic arm (preferably 6 DOF) that has a decent payload?
