Control a 6DOF Robot arm with GCode?

I don’t have a ton of experience with GCode, but I’m considering using it to control my 6DOF robot arm project. I’ve only ever seen it used in 3DOF applications, though (like 3D printers or CNC machines). Is GCode appropriate for a 6DOF robot arm application? Can anyone point me at an open-source or reference implementation of this type of application (using GRBL or whatever)?
