Cruise Automation President & CTO to keynote Robotics Summit & Expo

Business-to-business publisher WTWH Media has announced that Kyle Vogt, co-founder, president, and chief technology officer of GM Cruise LLC, will deliver a keynote presentation at the Robotics Summit & Expo. The international event is focused on the technical issues involved with the design, development, manufacture, and delivery of commercial robots. The 2019 Robotics Summit & Expo takes place June 5-6 at the Seaport World Trade Center in Boston.

Vogt’s keynote on June 6 at 9:30 a.m., “Why Precision Maps Are Actually a Really Good Idea,” will cover the benefits of using maps and other priors to achieve superhuman performance of self-driving cars. He will discuss both sides of the great HD Maps Debate, describe why maps improve self-driving car safety, and explain how many of the perceived limitations or considerations can be overcome. Vogt will also address the issue of collecting maps at scale, handling map changes, and dealing with the “first responder” problem for self-driving cars.

Vogt co-founded Cruise Automation in 2013. Under the leadership of Vogt and co-founder Dan Kan, Cruise developed the world’s first all-electric fleet of self-driving cars. Vogt’s interest in self-driving technology stems from competing in Battlebots at an early age. By 14 years old, he had built his first self-driving prototype out of a Power Wheels car.

A native of Kansas City, Kan., Vogt studied computer science and electrical engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. At MIT, Vogt worked on the DARPA Grand Challenge, for which he co-led a team to retrofit a Ford F-150 with drive-by-wire capability and sensors.
