Why is bipedal locomotion so challenging?

So I am pretty much a layman, and have only a passing knowledge of robotics. But it seems strange to me, something as easy as just walking around is so incredibly challenging. It took Honda decades to get Asimo barely able to walk on a flat surface Boston dynamics, seems to be doing well at it but their stuff always seems to be in a very controlled enveionement.
